The styling of this console table was inspired by our New Zealand Summer garden and our mum's gorgeous hydrangea painting. We understand that having a console in front of a window may not be a scenario that you have, but this could easily be substituted for a large mirror or a beautiful piece of artwork. Here are some basic interior designer console styling tips to consider:
USE BOTANICALS TO INCORPORATE IN ACCENT COLOURS
Ā
For us this meant drawing on the colours in the garden and hydrangea painting. We featured our 'Blue Moon' arrangement here. The dark textural vase adds a modern element whilst adding contrast and depth to the fresh summer colours.Ā
CONSIDER ADDING LIGHTING
Ā
Not only does a lamp provide a beautiful atmosphere in the evenings, it also is a great tool to bring in other design elements. Our 'Brass finish table lamp with linen look lampshade' brings a reflective property which elevates the space, whilst the shade brings a defined sculptural form which juxtaposes the free form florals on the opposite side.
Ā
ADD LAYERS & TEXTURES
Ā
Use a mix of textures and heights to add visual interest. Layer decorative items such as vases, sculptures or books to avoid a flat, one-dimensional look. Books are a wonderful way to add a bit of height without adding too much visually. We selected the AD 100 book here as the colour blends with the marble top - it adds height without becoming a focal point. Depending on the console table, sometimes it is necessary to add visual weight on the floor to ground the look. We used a small stool and basket ā these are great options for entrance tables where you want to store away shoes/mess (and have a stool handy for sitting while putting on your shoes). Alternatively, 2 ottomans under a console table is also a great option.
Ā
CONSIDER FORM/SHAPE
Ā
Add items that intrigue the eye. Sculptural items are perfect as they contrast classical silhouettes. We added our favourite green Moroccan bowls, for their amazing glaze, patina and colour, but also for their organic forms. They are beautiful kept empty but could easily be filled with keys (if this console was at the front door), chocolates or nuts (at a dinner party), or little treasures you have collected.
