Heather’s 1 of 1 Studio Edit is a weekly release of singular, one-of-a-kind faux arrangements, each designed and made just once in our studio. This series allows Heather the freedom to express herself creatively, designing artistic, sculptural pieces guided by intuition, material, and moment — without repetition or constraint. Each arrangement is created for 'one space only'. When it’s gone, it’s gone.
Inspiration
It is amazing to me how the things we find beautiful don’t really change over time. I’ve long been drawn to the gentle contours of rolling hills, the rugged texture in the bark of a Pohutukawa, and the ripple marks the ocean leaves behind on black sand beaches. When I look back at the prints and sculptures I created at art school, I can see those same influences strongly shaping my work then – just as they continue to do today. In my etchings, I was fascinated by contour and the interplay of light and shadow. In the woodcuts, it was the strength of line that created rhythm and pattern. Looking at this arrangement, I realise those artistic threads are still very much part of my creative language. The way lines guide the eye, how texture invites you closer and how contrast brings a piece to life – it’s the same design conversation, simply expressed through a different medium.
Design Intent
I like to look beyond the flower, choosing instead to highlight the small details that often go unnoticed – the curve of a stem, the texture of a leaf, the intricate structure within a bloom. When these elements are brought together, they begin to speak to one another, forming something greater than their individual parts. The arrangement becomes more than a collection of botanicals; it evolves into a sculptural piece – one that invites you to pause, look closer, and discover beauty you may not have seen at first glance.
The Details
There is a quiet delicacy in the colour palette of this arrangement that reveals itself the longer you look at it. Subtle blush and plum undertones emerge adding warmth without overwhelming the composition. The surrounding foliage acts like a frame, allowing the more nuanced colours to be fully appreciated. The brighter textural elements feel even more luminous against the richer leaves, while the deeper tones bring a clam sophistication and balance.
Where It Works Best
This arrangement would look stunning on any console - ideally against a wall as it is designed to be viewed from the front. It might be lovely to display it somewhere where you can sit and enjoy it, but in an entry way or hallway would also be perfect.
